Breakout: RIPL 102: Unlocking the Potential of Library and Community Data to Generate Value
This session will also be offered on Monday at 12:45-3:15 PM.
How can you take the data you collect and put it into action? In this session, participants will engage in hands-on activities to practice using data for decision making, strategic planning, and advocacy. Participants will learn how to:
- implement simple processes for analyzing data from their Public Libraries Survey (also known as the Public Library Annual Report or State Report, depending on the state), including examining trends and peer comparisons;
- use freely available demographic data sources and other tools, such as interviews, focus groups, and informal input, to learn about community needs, interests, and aspirations; and
- bring all these data together to see how the results can be used for savvy decision-making, strategic planning, and advocating for resources.
Throughout the session, an emphasis will be placed on simple methods and tools that can be easily implemented when staff and other resources are limited.
This session is recommended for participants who are new to data and evaluation as well as those who work in small and rural libraries.
