Breakout: Making Your Data Speak for You: Visualizing Your Data with Tableau

Libraries collect large volumes of data that are seldom shared with the public via their OPAC’s circulation and patron information systems. Learn how to transform these datasets into powerful tools to help your institution connect with stakeholders, advocate for resource enhancements, and more. In this session participants will jointly explore a real library dataset using Tableau, a data visualization and analysis program designed to help you discover patterns in your data and share these discoveries with others. We will cover best practices for communicating with data visualizations and a number of visualization techniques, including filled maps, symbol maps, basic chart types, and more advanced techniques like treemaps and bullet charts as time permits. Dataset will be provided by the instructor.

To get the most out of this session, participants should bring a laptop and download a trial version of Tableau Desktop prior to the session: http://www.tableau.com/products/desktop
