I’ve really enjoyed this session – it’s already come in handy at my work. I’m hoping to incorporate more evaluation into my department’s work and have started with a feedback survey. I watched this session again while writing it to guide me through! I’m really looking forward to next week!
I have an embarrassing but somewhat humorous and very instructive experience to share about the importance of back-translation when administering a survey in multiple languages. We administered an adult programming survey, and one of the important things we wanted to learn is what time of day most adults were available to attend programs. In English, the choices were: weekday mornings, weekday afternoons, weekend evenings, Saturday mornings, and Saturday afternoons. In Spanish, both “afternoons” and “evenings” translate as “tardes.” We didn’t notice this until we had already administered the surveys. We got a LOT of weekday “tardes” answers and did not know whether the respondents meant they were available during the afternoons or evenings! That question ended up totally wasted for our Spanish-speaking patrons, who were one of the most important audiences to get this answer from!
