Breakout: Introduction to GIS (Geographic Information System)

In a time when the quantity and diversity of data are expanding at almost unimaginable rates, the ability to learn from and use this flood of information is increasingly valuable. Maps are a particularly powerful tool for transforming diverse datasets into persuasive, visual stories that librarians can use to better understand their communities, make decisions, advocate for themselves, and much more. This breakout session provides the conceptual and technical foundation necessary for participants to start making their own digital maps using geographic information systems (GIS).

Specifically, this session will provide participants with the knowledge and skills necessary to begin making maps using one of the most popular commercial software packages, ESRI ArcGIS. Participants will learn how to find and load data; perform basic spatial analysis; and visualize results to produce compelling spatial stories. Participants with access to ArcGIS will be able to follow along with the instructors to gain hands-on experience creating mapped stories that demonstrate the impact of libraries on their local communities.
